Joy in the simple things

At noon today as we were leaving school, Ren asked if he had to wear his jacket. I pointed outside and said, “Well, of course you do: look how it’s pouring rain out there!”

But then my inner child scolded me and I re-considered. “Actually, it is warm out there, so no, you don’t have to wear your jacket if you don’t want to. Just be prepared to get very, very wet”. With those simple words, I made my boy so very happy.

When we arrived home, he wanted to continue to play outside in the rain. Once again, I listened to my inner child and agreed. After all, it was a gorgeous steady, warm rain with no wind and no lightning.

I quickly grabbed my camera to capture Ren’s joy and then spent the next half hour fumbling under an umbrella trying to keep the camera dry while I snapped away at Ren’s goofy antics in the downpour. I love the joy he shows in these spontaneous moments.

  • Those are some deep puddles I tell ya – my girls would love them!!
Actually, my girls have been up to the same thing, a few times this past spring and even today too! My 'inner child' loves to watch their glee as they stomp through puddles.
