Don’t let the leather jacket and fauxhawk fool you: this boy is a softie.

The other morning as I was putting the finishing touches on Claire’s hair, Ren walked into the room. He took one look at his sis, and exclaimed with such sweet sincerity: “Wow, her look beautiful!”

I have another sweet story about something Ren said but I have to provide a bit of a backstory first. On Monday, I picked up Sun and Ren at school for a playdate. On the way home, Sun told me all about the boys who were chasing her around that morning. One little boy “J” even said he wanted to marry her! So I asked her if she wanted to marry “J”. Immediately, she replied, “No, I want to marry Ren!” And then she reminded me that she and Ren were already “married” – that they had a pretend wedding at her house a week or two before. For the rest of that day, I jokingly referred to them as “husband and wife”, as in “Okay Ren, we’re going to cross the street; hold on to your wife’s hand”, etc. The really funny thing was that neither kid even flinched or batted an eye when I did that!

Anyway, yesterday when I was taking these pictures, I asked Ren what he finds so special about Sun. First he said, “Her is nice”. When prompted for more, he then spoke these words that just melted my heart: “Her is a good person.”

Maybe I’m wrong but isn’t that an uncommonly sweet and unusual thing for a five-year old boy to say? I guess I expected him to say she’s funny or cute or something, but instead, he stunned me by describing her in that way. And it is 100% true about Sun – she is a kind-hearted little gal – but I just didn’t expect my boy to be able to articulate it so simply yet eloquently.

It sure makes me wonder what else goes on this little man’s heart and mind.
