Devonian Gardens in the fall
Last weekend, my brother Stu and his girlfriend Christina accompanied me and the kids to the Devonian Botanical Gardens. I was looking forward to visiting all fall but we made it there a little late: most of the trees had already lost their leaves and things weren’t as colourful as they would have been a week before. Oh well. It was still a gorgeous day to be outside! We’re finally getting some beautiful fall weather, after a mostly rainy and cold September.
Christina and Stu were surprised at how Claire poses for me. Stu told me he thought I actually guide her posing but nope, she just gets into whatever position she wants to and I pretend to be Nigel Barker from America’s Next Top Model:
This is what I got when I asked Ren to pose for me!
I’m trying to better understand how to photograph people in natural light at different times of the day. Mid-day, when we were at the gardens, is not an ideal time of day because the sun is directly overhead and it can create harsh shadows across faces. I wanted to practice shooting in the shade at mid-day but of course, my munchkins don’t want to go where I ask them. Or at least not for very long! But Stu and Christina were very accommodating models for me – hooray! Thanks for letting me experiment with light with you as my models!
Gotta love this “out-take”!
The one above was almost spontaneous; I had actually just captured a smooch like this one but Ren’s little head was in the bottom of the photo. Rather than worrying about photoshopping him out later, I asked Stu and Christina to smooch once more for the camera.
Besides being a good brother to his camera-happy sis, Stu is a great uncle. He always lavishes lots of attention on the kids and he never fails to show up with fun treats for them. The treats this time around were pretty crazy: lollipops on skeleton arms and legs! But the kids weren’t too spooked to enjoy them 🙂
After all that sugar, the kids had a great time in the fallen leaves. Isn’t that what Autumn is all about?
